Financial Support

Biophysics students receive support from a variety of resources, notably its NIH training grant in structural biology, as well as support from the UCSF Chancellor's office and Graduate Division, and Biophysics faculty. It is the policy of the Graduate Group in Biophysics to provide tuition and fees for first year students as well as a stipend to cover living expenses during the first year. All incoming non-resident students are nominated by the program for a Graduate Division fellowship to defray tuition costs. Non-resident students are expected to obtain California residency for tuition purposes in subsequent years. In addition, students are encouraged to apply for predoctoral fellowships from other sources, such as the National Science Foundation. The Fellowship Office of the National Research Council (2101 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. 20418) is a source of information about these fellowships. Other fellowships appropriate for Biophysics students are offered by the Office of Naval Research (ASEE, 11 DuPont Circle, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20036) and the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation (PO Box 2230, Livermore, CA 94550).

During the second and subsequent years, resident fee and stipend support continues from program resources or faculty sponsors.
